Writing at the dawn of the new millennium, Willliam Johnston sees signs of a growing thirst for mysticism-a wisdom that goes beyond words and reasoning, beyond image and fantasy, before and after; into the timeless reality. Though Christianity has its own tradition of mysticism, it has been largely ignored by the church; hence the attraction for so many Christians to the traditions of the East. Now the recovery of mysticism for Christians come about in large part through dialogue and encounter with Asian spirituality, with the insights of modern cosmology, and the challenge of prophetic action on behalf of a suffering world.
