Taken from a portion of the Preface: This is not a book about God. To state the thesis somewhat more positively, this book is about life lived before God, what kind of life that is, and what happens when Christian life becomes indistinguishable from other forms of life in our increasingly pluralistic, religiously diverse, multicultural post-Christian society, What one believes about God and the way one lives before God are, of course, closely related. The lives Christians are called to live cannot be separated from the reality of the one before whom they live. But the limited focus of this essay is not on God but on the question of how Christians are to live when traditional interpretations and 'practices' of life before God seem to be in eclipse.
