When Richard has to go to school wearing a pair of oversized, bright purple pants, a gift from his Uncle Ken and Aunt Nannie, he senses this day might be a bit out of the ordinary. Sure enought, Mrs. Zookey has a special treat for Richard's class: today they will study the habits of mealworms. Every kid gets a petri dish containing five of their very own, real live specimens, and soon the class is crawling with critters. Richard names one of his 'pets' Uncle Ken, telling his friends that his real uncle is a very weird guy who hails from the planet Pluto. When the real Uncle Ken shows up is Mrs. Zookey's classroom, though, Richard has some serious explaining to do! Mrs. Zookey's high-spirited second grade takes center stage once again in this latest laugh-out-loud chapter book starring Richard.
