Caddie Woodlawn is based on the childhood experiences of Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother. It is about the adventures of a young pioneer girl as she grows up in Wisconsin in the 1860's. The story begins when Caddie is eleven years old. She is described as a tomboy who would rather work in the fields and run wild with her brothers than act ladylike and learn how to cook.
