The vast land of China was home to one of the first great civilizations approximately 6,000 years ago. Today it is the most populous nation in the world- over a billion people, 20 percent of the earth's population, lives in China. The country draws millions of tourists to see its many historic attractions, such as the Great Wall of China. One of the 'Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,' the 25-foot tall wall was built thousands of years ago as a defense against invasion and stretches across 1,500 miles. But China's modern history has been one of many changes. Although the country has been Communist since 1949, Chinese leaders have attempted to build a modern, self-sufficient industrial nation. At the same time, the Chinese have attempted to preserve the traditions of their past as western customs and clothing begin to become more prevalent. A nation with a glorious history, China is a world superpower at the dawn of the 21st century. Ages 9-12
