Pieper served on the faculty and later as president of Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He also served as chief dogmatician and president of the Missouri Synod from 1899-1911. Pieper's chief concerns in his dogmatics are the infallible authority of scripture, which he saw crumbling in the German, Lutheran Church, and the person and work of Jesus Christ. The significance of this work has not faded in the 80 years since its first publication, and all Christians both within and outside the Lutheran tradition will benefit from these volumes. Volume 1-Deals with the nature of theology, Holy Scripture, God, creation, divine providence, angels, and man. Volume 2-Deals with the grace of God in Christ, Christ's person and work, saving faith, conversion, and justification by faith. Volume 3-Deals with sanctification, preservation, the means of grace, the Church, the ministry, the election of grace, and eschatology. Volume 4-Serves as an index to the first three volumes.
