This concluding part-volume in the Doctrine of Reconciliation was never completed and thus remains a fragment. However, its contents set forth Barth's detailed exposition of baptism, which stands as the foundation of the Christian life. Barth divides his treatment into the dual themes of baptism with the Holy Spirit and baptism with water. The discussion contains Barth's rejection of infant baptism as well as his understanding of baptism as non-sacramental, in distinction to Roman Catholic theology. It also highlights Barth's treatment of the free response on the part of humans to the reconciling work of Christ.
