Spanish legend claimed that in the New World there were seven cities built of gold and filled with great treasure. Many conquistadors set out to find these cities, cluding Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. For three years, Coronado and his small army wandered through the American Southwest. To their disappointment, instead of magnificent cities they found only small pueblos made od mud and clay. The only treasure that Coronado and his men discovered was the land itself. The leader sent out parties to explore the Southwest. IN his notes, he recorded the beauties of the painted desert, the wonders of the Grand Canyon, and the Spainiards encountered. When he returned home, Coronado was considered a failure. Today, he is seen as a brave explorer and a careful observer of life in the Southwest.
