The Lord Jesus spoke of his mission to bring life in abundance to all who trust in him (John 10:10). In his classic book Henry Scougal fastens attention on eternal life as its essential theme. It is The Life of God in the Soul of Man. Discovering Scougal through the writing of John Piper, Steve Hanchett found that the archaic language and sentence structure, proved to be a real barrier to understanding Scougal's meaning. So he set out to simplify Scougal's language and to present his meaning in a form that today's readers would easily grasp. Archbishop Leighton (1611-1684) greatly influenced Scougal (1650-1678). They both believed that the true Christianity is God's life in the souls of men and women. It is therefore fitting that Leighton's Rules and Instructions for a Holy Life should be printed here with Scougal's classic. |
