The Hermeneia Commentaries are modern, critical and scholarly treatments of the scriptures. This first of two volumes on the gospel of John by Ernst Haenchen includes an introductory section which discusses the authorship, date, community, and structure of the text as well as the theology of the gospel and its relationship to Gnosticism. The introductory material on Johannine criticism is some of the clearest exposition for students available anywhere. The commentary itself is in-depth in its linguistic and historical analysis, dealing with the theology of this John's gospel. Not recommended for the novice.
