'Hands-On Science: The ABCs of Chemistry' offers 17 memorable activities that will help middle school and early high school students master some of the most important chemical concepts. Developed in concert with the National Science Education Standards, these classroom-tested activities build a greater understanding of chemical reactions, calorimetry, simple electrochemistry, acids and bases, and more. Because of the nature of the chemicals and equipment required for some activities in chemistry, adult supervision is strongly recommended. Appropriate safety precautions are indicated for these activities. For this book, the equipment is kept simple. In writing this book, the author tried to keep the equipment costs low and to choose equipment that is readily available. When more costly equipment is suggested, alternatives are recommended so that each activity can be performed with either more or less sophisticated equipment. Each activity has a Teacher Resource section that includes - besides helpful hints and suggestions - a scoring rubric, quiz questions, and Internet connections for those students who wish to go further and carry out the follow-up activities.
