Being a parent, as one has said, is not for cowards. There is plenty of stress and distress in this eternally important work. Souls are at stake, most noticeably the souls of our children. Loving parents will obviously be distressed about the state of their children's souls. In this rare work by Cotton Mather, he gives 'counsels and comforts for godly parents who are afflicted with ungodly children.' Then he gives 'warnings unto children to beware of all evil courses which would be afflictive to their parents.' What sweet harmony to see parents and children working together for salvation!
