The revised Order of Christian Funerals inserts the option for cremation into the age-old Catholic tradition. From biblical times, we have honored the body as a witness among us to the sacramental presence of God and at once a temple of God's Holy Spirit. Today, both the body of the deceased Christian and its cremated mortal remains receive due Christian respect. This booklet surveys the Catholic heritage behind recent cremation directives when cremated mortal remains take the place of the body in the Catholic funeral liturgy.
