The no theatre achieved its classic form in the fifteenth century, largely through the genius of the dramatist Zeami. It is revered in Japan as a cultural treasure and its spiritual and sensuous beauty has influenced such English-speaking artists as Yeats, Ezra Pound and Benjamin Britten. No drama combines lyric prose and poetry, and these twenty-four plays have been selected to demonstrate the richness of no as literature and as a literature rooted in Buddhism. Each play is accompanied by full notes and stage directions and an introduction that draws on current Japanese scholarship as well as offering new interpretations.
