Johann Arndt lived in a time when rational orthodoxy with all of its 'headiness' was struggling with the movement in the church to be more 'pietistic' in emphasis. Arndt encouraged a reading behind the Lutheran orthodox doctrine of the day to see what Luther was really about, that is the living out of faith. Arndt encouraged a movement towards perfectionism and growth in spirituality. His work 'True Christianity' is here translated from the German.
