Kaya misses her sister Speaking Rain, who is being held a slave to another tribe. She is unable to shake her sad thoughts and is unable to gather food with the other women. Soon she finds a starving dog in the woods and decides to help her, feeding her and naming her Lone Dog. Lone Dog is mistrusted by her people, but Kaya knows that she is a good dog. Lone Dog has her puppies and soon they are ready to join the tribe's dog pack, but will Lone Dog stay as well?
