This vocabulary program contains 900 words chosen to be interesting and useful, to broaden vocabulary, and to improve spelling. It is a flexible program, excellent for use in a mixed-ability classroom. Students work with the words in a variety of ways: using them in original sentences, filling in the blanks of given sentences, matching words with their meanings, and finding the week's words in a word-search puzzle. Each unit is a balanced mixture of easier and harder words. The definitions are short, clear, and informal - less complicated than dictionary definitions. They are designed to make a firm connection between each student's listening and speaking vocabularies and the printed word. Each lesson contains homonyms or words easily confused. Grades 4-8. Kim Marshall Series: Vocabulary Book 1 contains 18 units of 25 words. Each unit is intended to be a week's worth of work, but teachers may choose to move at a slower pace. A word list for the entire series fills the first few pages, and a chart on the inside back cover allows students to keep track of their progress on tests. Books 1 and 2 are equivalent; they can be used together or separately, and in any order.
