The final installment of Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, Kristin, Erlend, and their sons return to her childhood home, Jorundgaard. Increasingly concerned about her sons' prospects as they grow older, she and Erlend begin to quarrel more, eventually leading to Erlend moving out of the house.
