This volume contains the first part of Luther's Lectures on Isaiah, covering chapters 1-39, or, as he called it, the First Book of Isaiah. Luther greets the reader of his Lectures on Isaiah with the same theme. The Reformer looks at the message of the prophets, a lesson for the modern man, for all time. The lesson is that God in Jesus Christ comes to the rescue of His people in His own good time, just as he did to the nation and government of the Jews in Isaiah's time, but meanwhile His people are to await His help in complete confidence and not rely on self-help and on alliances with other men. According Luther bids us to learn from Isaiah that we are helped and protected by God exactly as the people of Israel were and that we are also chastened like them when this is necessary. This provides a framework for an unusual wealth of pithy aphorisms based on the word of Isaiah.
