This book represents fourteen essays concerning modern translational methodology. Discourse analysis is broadly defined as the attempt to study the organization of language above the sentence level. It is the study of larger linguistic units such as entire conversations or written texts. Discourse analysis is also concerned with language as it is used in social contexts, the belief being that language and situation are inseparable. Much of the work in discourse analysis is directed toward investigating the relationships between language, action, thought, and situation. Chief among its concerns is to show the internal coherence or unity of a particular text.
