As Mildred's stay at Roselands draws to a close, she is torn between her beloved home in frontier Indiana and her new found friends and family. She is now a beautiful young woman and must discourage the advances of two suitors, for she still loves Charlie Landreth. Elsie, now reunited with her father adn recovered from a life threatening illness, travels with him on a voyage filled with danger to visit the Keiths in a rustic Pleasant Plains.
