Twelve-year-old Leeann Peters is looking forward to riding the horses at the guest ranch in Arizona, where Mom has accepted a job as cook after her second marriage fell apart. Happily, Leeann fits right in at her new school and makes freinds with a likable group of boys and girls. Riding turns out to be a problem, though, when Leeann alienates the head wrangler. Crotchety Amos forbids her to go near the horses, let alone ride them. How Leeann changes Amos's mind and gets permission to ride the high spirited Sassy is just one plot strand in an appealing story that includes a rodeo for kids with special needs and a first romace. With its endearing heroine and vivid desert setting this story will delight all those young readers who dream of riding their own special horse.
