The poems of Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses have been popular with children ever since the book first appeared more than a hundred years ago. And no poem in the collection is remembered more fondly than 'My Shadow.' Glenna Lang has created a visual narrative for 'My Shadow' depicting a young girl's travels through a dream nightscape with her shadow companion. Beautifully true to the sense and spirit of Stevenson's work, the illustrations add their own grace and rich atmosphere. As the poem begins, the pictures tell the story of a young child growing curious about the shadow that follows her. That night, as she sleeps, she dreams of walking in the forest at night with her toy animals--now real, live animals--and, of course, her shadow for company. Finally she returns in her dream to bed and rises in the soft early morning light to find 'my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head, had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.' Young children will love the strong, simple shapes and colors of the illustrations and will enjoy trying to discover where all the daytime toys appear in the night-time forest. This edition of My Shadwo presents both a classic interpretaion of one of the English language's most beloved poems and a wonderful way to share bedtime reading with a younger child.
