Horace Mann is, perhaps the greatest name in the history of American education .In 1837, after a career in law and politics, he began what was to be a twelve-year term presiding over the Massachusetts Board of Education, the first in the country. In 1840, as part of his Fourth Annual Report of the Board of Education, Mann wrote On the Art of Teaching. Its message on the qualifications essential for those undertaking the momentous task of training children has lived on, as a timeless and inspiring appeal to some of our country's most dedicated servants.
