As an incarnation of evil and a catalyst of jealousy, vengeance and murder, Iago is the mainspring of Othello. One of Shakespeare's most intriguing characters, Iago sets out to convince Othello of his wife's infidelity with Cassio. His motives are diverse - revenge, vanity, envy - but they arouse strong suspicions in Othello's breast. Though noble and courageous, Othello finally allows himself to be duped by the coldly calculating Iago and 'Chaos is come again'.
