Two thousand years ago, Pontius Pilate asked Jesus the question 'What is truth?' For many, particularly in our postmodern society, that question still remains, along with other related questions. By what standard is truth determined? Whose truth is true? Is there absolute truth?
In response to these questions, and in response to the general decline in respect for the truth, Devlin Donaldson and Steve Wamberg have written Pinocchio Nation. The trampling of truth is rampant in our society, according to the authors. Pragmatism has become the standard by which to judge all actions. But pure pragmatism has dangerous repercussions for society.
Donaldson and Wamberg encourage every reader to play their part in the promotion of integrity and truth, in their family, at work, and in the community. Truth must be practical, say the authors, and they attempt to bring truth back into the practical realm from its longtime residence in the abstract realm of philosophy. And when truth is practical, life change is possible. So be a standard bearer for truth, and help to enact and enable change in our society.
