The major premise of this book is that the study of grammar can lead to better reading and speaking. And so can the study of punctuation. But they must all be learned together, in a logical sequence, with each new piece building upon those which came before. That is why virtually all exercises in this book call for written responses. The physical act of writing, whether it be an apt comparison, a phrase that captures the look on a character's face, or a clause that cements a logical relationship between ideas, contributes far more to both the pleasure and the effectiveness of the lesson than does the mere identification of a grammatical puzzler. Except for a handful of exercises, there is no single right answer, but instead an opportunity for the student to demonstrate both understanding of the lesson and creativity. Fifty exercises are included; no answer keys. Grades 7-12.
