'Developing Reading Power' is a unique supplemental series in which high-interest stories are brought together with activities that promote reading skills. Emphasis is on literal and inferential comprehension. Since students learn to read by reading, one of the first goals of the authors was to select stories that children would want to read. This goal was met by taking stories from 'Highlights for Children Magazine,' a magazine that is highly respected by teachers. The second goal was to make sure that children could read the stories. That is why many of the stories are within the students' independent reading range for each grade. Adequate content, however, is also included that is at the instructional level for each grade, making it possible for students to gain in understanding of important new concepts, skills, and reading vocabulary. 64 pages, book 3.
