Though he's an avid baseball fan, Josh Morris is likely the worst player on the Wilson Tigers, and with good reason: he's afraid of the ball. His teammates cruelly dub him 'Roots'. Then they accuse him of losing an important game. Angry and humiliated, Josh storms off to spend the summer - possibly the entire year - with his father in Wisconsin. But Dad has remarried and he now has a stepsister who he can't stand. He rethinks whether or not he should have left. But he finds a garage full of valuable baseball memorabilia and his summer.
