Sure, some people regard Jesus as divine 'fire insurance.' But most Christians know God is involved in a great work in the world, and they want to participate. They want to know that their lives count for something. When they read of how God called the great prophets, the apostles, and the evangelists to mighty works, they dream of being called to something, too. The Bible has a lot to say about our calling as Christians. But sometimes Christians imagine that all true callings come in dramatic visions, like those given to Paul and Isaiah. It's easy to tune out God's quiet voice speaking through the Scriptures and the ordinariness of life.
