As Lion of Zion Entertainment's Dancehall Baptism: Chapter One introduced the world to the powerful genre of Jamaican gospel dancehall, we now take you on a trip to a separate set of islands in the southeast Caribbean - Trinidad & Tobago - for an introduction to soca. If reggae music is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, then soca is the pulse. Created by the late Ras Shorty I in 1973, 'Soca' is short for the 'soul of calypso.' It is a unique hybrid of Caribbean instrumentation and bangra/chutney beats, bridging the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago - the African and the East Indian. Layered over the driving kick drum and bubbling bass lines are syncopated up-tempo chutney beats accentuated by militatnt snare stabs. Packed with seventeen tracks of powerful music and World-filled lyrics, Soca Baptism presents a generous sampling of this Caribbean music for the mind, body, soul, and spirit.
