This book looks at the phenomenon of 'Speaking in Tongues' in its religio-historical context. Gerald Hovenden begins by reviewing recent scholarly studies of 'inspired speech' in the ancient world, where parallels have been alleged with the early Christian experience as recorded in the New Testament. Both the Lukan and Pauline references to 'tongues' are then considered in detail in order to discern the signifigance of this phenomenon for the church in its mission and worship.
