Thailand is a country of great natural beauty and resources in Southeast Asia. Called by some 'the land of smiles,' it is home to a gracious and proud people who have struggled to remain independent amidst the onslaught of foreign powers that have taken over many of its neighbors. It is also home to more than 100,000 species of flowers, vast forests, and over 280 different mammals, including elephants, tigers, and wild buffalos. Thailand is a monarchy today ruled by a king who has sat on the throne for more than fifty years. Despite this stability the parliamentary government has changed hands and been taken over by the military many times. Consequently Thailand's economy has suffered at the hands of all these changes. But Thailand's people's spirit endures and as they struggle into the 21st century many of their ancient customs continue to be part of their everyday lives.
