Gutierrez has a great deal to say to the North American church. He writes from a continent where 60 percent of the population lives in 'poverty' or 'extreme poverty,' and in a country where assasination of priest, bishops and other believers is far too common. This volume addresses the Vatican's teaching on work and poverty, the journey of the Latin American church, and the relationship between theology and the church. Throughout his writing he addresses the question of how we must speak of God in a world of suffering. Gutierrez argues that we must see libertation and freedom from poverty and oppression as real images of the Kingdom of God, which has yet to arrive in its fullness.
