Augustine (354-430) is the most influential of the Fathers of the Western Church. He wrote The problem of Free Coice between the years of 388 and 395 shortly after departing from Manichaeanism. Thus, this tractate was written to answer the Manichaean objection to Christianity that, since the problem of evil is undeniable, it is inconceivable that God can be both almighty and infinitely good. Teh Problem of Free Choice is a work which Augustine referred to several other times in his later writings.
