Winter was over. Planted on its hillside, the small tree luxuriated in warm and restorative sunlight. Such a relief! Its roots stirred, its branches spread out. Even as it relaxed, however, the tree returned to the memories of hardships endured during the previous months, of being forgotten and left to suffer alone. It is not enough to survive. It is necessary to hold the past within oneself and learn what the past has to teach. From the vantage point of summer, the tree struggled to incorporate the winter experience and affirm its hard wisdom. Here is an adult fable for all persons who have come through difficult times. It is a book for survivors who, on the other side of suffering, can embrace joy and grow in compassion.
