A book about the stunning variety of ways the Bible is preached, taught, studied, and revered in the United States today. Based on her interviews with biblical scholars (Ched Myers, Walter Wink, Marcus Borg), ministers (Peter Gomes, Jim Forbes, Kay Arthur), and Bible study groups (in Chicago, New York, Colorado Springs, Atlanta), Monroe's book offers a 'portrait by lightning flashes' of the Bible in American culture. Monroe's odyssey is motivated by her desire to understand , first, how it can be that all the factions in this diverse group of believers are reading the same book and, second, how we can draw an understanding of what it means to read the Bible from the theological conflicts and coincidences among communities of believers across the denominational spectrum.
