Through the lock is an exciting historical novel that gives readers a glimpse of life in the Pioneer Valley of New England during the canal period and celebrates the strength and resourcefulness of some remarkable able young people as they come to define for themselves the meaning of the word family. A ward of the state of Massachusetts in 1840, Etta has escaped last in a string of foster homes in search of a place where she can live with her brother and sister as a family. Freezing and hungry, she takes refuge in a shack along the New Haven and Northampton Canal. In it she meets Walter, a boy who is also trying to make a home and a life for himself. As soon as Walter agrees to let her move in, she schemes to have her family move in also. But there are still some challenges that she and Walter must overcome. Together with a boy named Jake.
