Many Americans view Islam only through the eyes of the media - spotlighting many positive aspects, downplaying the negative, seldom showing the atrocities committed against non-Muslims by Muslims. One often overlooked aspect is the subjugation of Muslim women by Muslim men. Written by courageous women, including at least one ex-Muslim, who have worked in areas where Islam is prevalent, this book documents the lives and experiences of many Muslim women. Muslim women today inhabit many parts of society, although mostly as second-class citizens, with total reliance on a Muslim man and held captive by the patriarchal religion they have been born into. Conversely, women who choose Islam cannot understand its depths, and so accept what they view as positive elements without fully realizing what that acceptance means.
