This book is primarily about the function of religion and how it is effectuated. What is going on here? What is this religion 'business' and who is doing it well?' - questions the mainline churches were not previously prepared to contemplate, and perhaps still are not. Though environmental influences may sway the more attenuated forms of religious life, they have much less effect upon the 'purer' or more vigorous forms which some people have been accustomed to look down upon as 'fanatical' sects. Why Conservative Churches Are Growing has given some aid and comfort to members of the rapidly growing churches by recognizing them as doing something right rather than dismissing them as superstitious zealots.
