Each lesson in these books introduces about twelve new words and contains several exercises plus a Wordly Wise section, which discusses words with interesting histories and distinguishes between words that are commonly confused. Exercises A, B, and C use these new words in context, teach multiple meanings of words, and give practice using the words in sentences. Exercise D reviews the lesson and earlier lessons. Correct completion of Exercise E gives part of a quotation, poem, or riddle. An additional exercise in each lesson deals in detail with roots, prefixes, and suffixes. There is no glossary in the upper level books (Books 4-9); the student must use a separate dictionary. The emphasis in the selection of words has been on providing a core vocabulary useful in a variety of verbal contexts, appropriate to students' level of experience and writing ability, and keyed to the level of reading material available to them.
