Each lesson in these books introduces about twelve new words and contains several exercises plus a Wordly Wise section, which discusses words with interesting histories and distinguishes between words that are commonly confused. The exercises include dealing with analogies, connotations, and literal and metaphorical usage. An additional exercises in each lesson deals in detail with roots, prefixes and suffixes. There is no glossary in the upper level books (books 4-9); the student must use a separate dictionary. The emphasis in the selection of words has been on providing a core vocabulary useful in a variety of verbal contexts, appropriate to students level of experience and writing ability, and keyed to the level of reading material available to them. 121 pages, softcover.
